Changing resolution catalyst/gnome

I searched for threads first but I haven't found anything relating to resolution with gdm. I have a fresh install of arch64 with gnome and catalyst 9.4. Problem is that changing the resolution from 1280x1024 to 1152x864 (for better refresh) with catalyst control center only lasts for the session, even when I remove the 1280 entry from xorg.conf modes. I load gdm via daemon. When I logout, the login window, and the next session I log into, shows a cropped screen (1280 worth of desktop through an 1152 screen.) Any ideas? Thanks.

Also, the screen goes blank after a few minutes even though I disabled all screensaver/powersave via System>Preferences? Odd.
