Re: How do i install GRUB?

Strange one... just at what point does it 'error out' ? When re-booting ?
After selecting the 'install grub to hard drive' option ?

Which version of Arch are you using - 64-bit or 32-bit ?

Are you using a SATA or PATA hard drive ?

Do you have more than one hard drive installed ?

What's the secret of life ? [ OK, forget this one smile ]

Any extra info you could provide would be well recieved.

Re: How do i install GRUB?

errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr i'm sure it's not installed. I fixed the problem, instead of just installing the package list selected as default i selected both and installed it and it installed GRUB fine.

Re: How do i install GRUB?

Have you read the manual ?
You'll need to install the desktop. Here's a brief, but complete, outline
of what to do to get KDE up and running. If you don't have an nVidia card,
ignore the nVidia bit. You can do the 'X -configure' bit. Check the Wiki for your graphics card.

1> Adjust mirrors in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist [ You can skip this,
and it will use the server you chose during the initial set-up]

         TYPE AS SHOWN BELOW:

2> adduser
3> pacman -Syu
4> pacman -S xorg cpio wget
5> pacman -S kde kde-l10n-en_gb mysql cups hplip terminus-font
6> pacman -S tk alsa-utils alsa-plugins gdb aspell-en vlc libnotify amarok
7> pacman -S firefox flashplugin thunderbird unzip zip unrar sudo
8> pacman -S nvidia
9> X -configure :1 [ NOTE: Capital 'X' ! ]
10> nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
11> pacman -Rd xorg-fonts-100dpi xorg-fonts-75dpi

12> edit /etc/inittab

13> reboot

NOTES:
When adding your user, [you, presumably], you'll be asked about 'additional groups'.
These should suffice for the moment:

wheel,audio,video,optical,lp,storage,disk

Type them as shown; comma separated.

After re-booting you'll be able to log onto KDE [ KDE will take a while to start on this first boot; its'
writing its' configuration files].  Akonadi will take a while to start up, then give some error messages.
Don't worry about these, just re-boot again and all will be well. Then read the Wiki !

Good luck,

Deej

[EDIT]
          Blasted typo !
[EDIT 2]
Removed group 'shadow' - no such group in Arch roll

Re: How do i install GRUB?

Did you perform an 'ftp install' ? Or did you just copy the core system
from the CD/DVD ? If the latter, I'd recommend an ftp install. I'd further
recommend reading the Wiki before you attempt it. It isn't difficult to do,
but reading the Wiki will fore-warn you of anything you should know
before starting the install.

As toad said, i think most of the problems you are having will not be so hard, if you go through the beginner's guide first to understand how the install works, before actually going through with it.  It's got pretty detailed sections on all the questions you've had so far.
