So I install Arch, get Alsa working, and install X. I use xorg-configure to make xorg.conf. I put HAL in the Daemons, I start HAL, I start x with xorg.conf and get a blank screen. I hit CTRL+ALT+Backspace and nothing happens. I hit CTRL+ALT+F1 and get back to console, X is still running and says:
Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic
I delete xorg.conf, reboot and try again. It fails again. I go on google. Nothing helps. I would post my xorg.conf, but since I'm on another computer I'll only do it if neccessary.
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

I'm using the intel legacy driver btw. The non-legacy gave me weird effects on my last install.
UPDATE: I tried hwd -xa. I got a really big and weird xorg.conf, but it looks better than the previous one. I tried X and still got a blank screen, but could not get out and had to do a hard reset.

Did you add this to your xorg.conf ?
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "DontZap" "False"
EndSection

lets take apart the issues
screen - try to start without any modes specified in xorg.conf - just 'intel' and thats it
keyboard and mouse - try to use the drivers that dont use evdev. see here

Ok, I removed the screens section out of xorg.conf (after a backup of course), if that's what you mean. It now says there were no screens found and FATAL ERROR'ed. So I removed the Screen heading in the ServerLayout section. Now I get the same GEM message. BTW, CTRL+ALT+Backspace works after adding the DontZap False option.
