Re: i installed gnome and now i cant login

Hi!

Although I too prefer the expression "shell thing" (I really do. There's less room for misconceptions with that.), I've been told that's to be called tty or something, if I got it right. Can't you switch to one (I think they're called vt's sometimes, too?) by pressing strg+alt+F1 (/F2 - F3)?

There you can log in as root and create a user account. Try adduser or useradd - choose wisely, if I remember right, one of the two makes you enter all the info & creates dirs, the other one just creates a user (which is pretty much unusable wink) - I never manage to remember, which one is which.

Also you could try looking at the wiki (beginners guide, etc), but that's boring (me like chaos!).

Good Luck!

Re: i installed gnome and now i cant login

If everything else really isn't accessible, you can still change your runlevel in grub for one boot to correct the settings. And if grub is messed up, you can repair it using the boot cd without reinstalling everything. And if your boot cd is broken, you can download a new one. I'm not sure what's to be done, if the Internet's broken too, but I think a reinstall wouldn't help there either.

Don't panic wink

Wait m8, I didn`t understand you quite well. Can you login as root from shell? I think you can`t login with root account from any X server only from shell. So try on another terminal to login as root, then create user and then login with user.

Boot to singel user mode, then add a user.

Can you confirm that ctrl-alt-F1 really doesn't return you to a tty login screen?  Does anything happen when you do this key sequence?

Re: i installed gnome and now i cant login

Probably new X. DontZap default has changed, so he can't Ctrl Alt F1.
And if GDM is as a daemon, I don't think runlevel will work, but I may be corrected (I'm not an expert on that).
In my opinion, booting the CD/USB, then chroot into the current install, then adduser (or disable gdm from CD) would be the fastest way.

dontzap does not affect ctrl-alt-F1, DontVTSwitch does (and it defaults to off)

And he can boot to init 1 to prevent gdm from start. The daemon in rc.conf don't get executed when you boot to init 1
