Using telnet and Expect

Hi

I have the latest Arch Linux installed and I only use the command-line interface, no desktops like KDE or Gnome.

Has anybody have any experience running Expect. I try to login to telnet from prompt:

expect premvet.exp

This file first starts telnet and then logs in passing the username and password.
It works fine but the problems in the telnet retunrs some strange characters. The thing is once I telnet this Unix server I enter an application that uses special characters to make a border round text. The characters that make these borders and lines are all garbled.
This DOES NOT happen if I start linux normaly, without using Expect:

telnet 192.168.2.1 23

The second thing is that whichever way I run telnet the backspace does not work. Is there a setting in telnetrc that has to be entered?
