I've seen this problem with Thunderbird 0.7.3, but it wasn't to the same extent.
Here's how to reproduce the bug.
1. Open Thunderbird 0.8 (package from Testing)
2. Write a new email
3. Attach a file
4. Send the email
If the file you attach has a . anywhere in the name, and you have j2re installed, Thunderbird crashes immediately. If you run mozilla-thunderbird from a console, you get
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not get the JVM manager
System error?:: Success
If you remove the j2re package, everything works fine. I don't need j2re, but I would like to keep it if possible some of those Yahoo games are nice to play with friends.
I just tried installing j2sdk as well to see if it would help... no luck. Still crashes.
I've also tried testing this problem with a brand new profile, and while running the program as the root user.

Installing j2re 1.5 from testing fixes this
and, as a nice side-effect, java games in firefox are much faster too
