gnome-power-manager woes

Hi all. I've been having a few problems with gnome-power-manager on my Dell Vostro since upgrading to Gnome 2.26. I was just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing the same issues:

- When unplugging my laptop, I no longer get any notifications. Gconf is correctly configured.
- When plugging my laptop into the mains, I (usually) get a notification which says words to the effect of: you have unplugged your laptop and it is now discharging. The icon is is correct.
- Closing the lid won't suspend the laptop, unless the laptop has been suspended at least once since coming up using the suspend options from the g-p-m menu or the system->shutdown menu.

I've tried a new gconf setup (removing ~/.gconf* and ~/.gnome*).

Any ideas?

This is probably a permissions/policy issue. Poke around /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/ directory and /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ to see whether you have appropriate permissions to do power management.

Try reinstalling "hal" package also I forget what those settings should be exactly

I've tried re-installing hal, but no luck I'm afraid.

It's not a show-stopper, so I'll keep trying different things when I get the opportunity.

Update: Suspend now works first time when closing the laptop lid. There have been a couple of gconf updates, maybe they're responsible?

The other problems remain.

I'm not knocking gnome-power-manager but I always had problems with it: some setting just didn't work, updates would introduce new problems, or create incompatibilities. Take a look at the gnome-power-manager bugs page and look at all the bugs. The guy that develops it is earnest though but I'm thinking eventually it's going to have to be re written.

not sure about it because it works well in ubuntu 9.04 and fedora 11 on my laptop HP 6720s, crappy on arch this is the second thing that is really anoying after the intel graphic driver....maybe somebody should look in to it

is pretty clear why on those is working. if you have seen on ubuntu gnom-power-manager is on 2.24 version and on fedora 11 gmp 2.26.1 is patched. http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/rpm … iew=markup

i've seen that on the new version 2.26.2 they removed the patches becase are commited upstream. on arch updating to 2.26.2 will solve your problem

Thank you wonder, i've built gpm 2.26.2 ( modified pkgbuild from 2.26.1 ) and everything works happy man

I've also built and installed gpm 2.26.2. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be much better. I have closing the laptop lid triggered to suspend the system, but it only works randomly now.

For me it worked only after first reboot, after that the same as 2.26.1. I've compiled 2.24.4, working like a charm, together with new kernel 2.6.30/testing and intel drivers 2.8.0 rc1/AUR I'm the happiest man right now. Two more thing to do - improve battery life and get SPSS working.

Sadly I did lost some time for studying on my exam

The latest gconf (2.26.2-2), gnome-power-manager (2.26.2-1) and devicekit-power (008-1) packages do not appear to have helped. In fact, when I unplugged my laptop last night, g-p-m said I was still plugged in after 20 minutes.

It's been a bad day. Random screen blackouts, one spontaneous suspend. g-p-m still tells me I have unplugged the laptop when the power is connected.

I've rebuilt and installed gnome-power-manager 2.24.4. Some sanity has been restored.

Another problem: I have a sony vaio notebook and almost everything works, except of this:
-I have set my gpm following:
-if the AC is plugged in and i close the laptop lid the screen goes blank (works fine)
-if the AC isn't plugged in and i cose the lid, it supeds the laptop (works fine)

but now, if i unplug the laptop from AC, after i closed (and opened) the lid at least once, while it was on AC, it suspeds. My question is: Has anyone the same problem as i have? Or, can anyone help me?

it seems to be related with ACPI and HAL problems.... this is the worst thig ever >_< i hate when the problem is ACPI/HAL related cause i never can solve em... lets see

That's already more than I can say from my sony vaio. Mine always blanks the screen, no matter what action I put in gnome-power-manager. What vaio do you have?

I have FE21B...

It seems that my ACPI work just fine cause it correctly detects if the lid is open or closed.... so it will be probably HAL related

Even downgrade of hal is impossible because of the dependencies.... damn.

Yeah, but that is something i don't want to do. I've been working on this system to make it work for a while now (like 4 months) and now this appeard. I'll try to recompile the hal/gnome-power-manager package and see if i can make it work (because it looks like g-p-m doesn't use HAL anymore (since 2.26.*))

But, after downgrading g-p-m to 2.24.* i learned that it does not solve this problem.... so this really seems to be HAL related (

ACPI is seeing if the lid is closed or opened.... HAL does not, (if i use lshal -m it works 1 time but it does not recognize if open or close it again) where coud the problem be? (running on acpi 1.4 and hal 0.5.12) plz help, this sh*t is killing me

Maybe you can replace GNOME's power manager with Xfce's power manager. It is much better. IMO, anyway, and even lets you control the speed of your CPU on actions (the GNOME developers used to have this, too, hidden away in GConf settings, then decided it was too useful of a feature and removed it).
