Various permission problems for XFCE [solved]

I just installed Arch, and XFCE. I'm starting it by logging to my user account, and typing 'startxfce4'. Works okay, but I have several problems:
a) Most icons are not found (they're invisible or show "X" icon). I have the tango icon set installed as per wiki. Icons work fine if I start from root
b) I cannot add a startup program (permission error)
c) I cannot change the default program for opening a file
d) Most XFCE settings are *not* preserved after logging out, like background, desktop icons, window settings. For example, the tips & tricks window is displayed everytime even though I unset the option.
e) Settings like terminal font size is not preserved if I close the terminal and then start it again.
f) Also, the tips and tricks window doesn't display any tips at all (not needed, but seems to be part of the problem).

I'm currently not using a login manager, would it fix my errors (and what's the preferred one for XFCE)?

Solved:
I noticed some permission errors in my home folder, fixed them with
cd /home/<user>
chown -R <user> .
It seems like all the problems are gone!
