DVD playback problems... another one yes

Hi!

I've been having some problems with HAL and automounting DVD, USB etc. but after doing alot of reading here at the forum I finally got the mounting working. I've followed the HAL wiki to the letter. I've alo installed libdvdcss, libdvdnav and libdvdread. This is what I get when trying to play dvd with mplayer:

sudo mplayer dvd://media/EC_108887/
MPlayer dev-SVN-rUNKNOWN-4.3.3 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ (Family: 15, Model: 43, Stepping: 1)
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled with runtime CPU detection.
137 audio & 292 video codecs
mplayer: could not open config files /home/per/.lircrc and /etc/lircrc
mplayer: No such file or directory
Failed to read LIRC config file ~/.lircrc.

Playing dvd://media/EC_108887/.
The hostname option must be an integer: media
Struct dvd, field hostname parsing error: media
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't stat EC_108887/
No such file or directory
Couldn't open DVD device: EC_108887/ (No such file or directory)
No stream found to handle url dvd://media/EC_108887/

Exiting... (End of file)

I'm using XBMC and it can "see" the DVD, but just keeps telling me to insert dvd when I try to play it. In other words both Mplayer and XBMC fail when trying to play DVD. I've goolged and rtfm and searched the forum but I just can't seem to get it working.

Why can't I play my DVDs when it's finally mounting?!! I've been struggling with the mount issue for weeks now and when I finally get it working the playback fu**s up. What is wrong?

Edit: btw, I can't get the dvd to eject either if that sheds any light on the problem. I'm using PCManFM with openbox. I'm not mounting the dvd through fstab since that whil mess things up for HAL.

First of all, the sudo prefix is not necessary. Second, I always use mplayer dvd:// to open a dvd, does that work for you? dvd:// should automatically link to your dvd drive.

Re: DVD playback problems... another one yes

Thanks for the reply!

I use Mplayer dvd:// and then I "tabbed" the rest of it. I clearly see that when I insert a DVD it's mounted by HAL as /media/*the-name-of-the-dvd* so it should be pointing to the right device in the example I stated.

I get the same error without sudo...

Either don't mount the dvd when you want to play it(the best), or play the media file directly from the mountpoint instead.

Re: DVD playback problems... another one yes

I was hoping it'd be possible to get the dvd mounted and then play it in both mplayer and XBMC. It seems to be a huge problem getting dvds to work in archlinux. sad

Is this a HAL problem or dvds in general?

Re: DVD playback problems... another one yes

mplayer /media/dvd/video_ts/whatever.vob

But seriously, don't mount video dvd's if you want to play them.
