Maybe something is wrong with your firefox, but I just click the button to the left of the seach box (with the yahoo symbol and the downwards arrow) and choose google from the list. When i press ctrl + k, the cursor moves to the seach box and searches using whatever engine I've selected.

you don't have a search box unless you press ctrl+k? can you see the icon of the search engine? if so, you should be able to click it and go to the "manage search engines" menu. Failing that, pressing ctrl+up, or ctrl+down while you are in the search engine box lets you scroll through your list of search engines.

To clarify: you removed the search bar (presumably via View > Toolbars > Customize or the equivalent). Ctrl-K causes the currently focused tab to surf to yahoo.com. You typed about:config into the Address bar and changed browser.search.searchEnginesURL to http://www.google.com and are still surfing to Yahoo when you hit Ctrl-K. Correct?
For people who have the search bar, Ctrl-K switches focus to the search bar and Ctrl-L to the address bar. Apparently when the search bar is disabled Ctrl-K causes FF to browse to the search engine's Web page. I didn't know that either.

weird, sounds like a problem common to windows-users installing bogus freeware... no idea what is overriding your settings..?
as a workaround, you could bookmark this, give it a keyword, and use ctrl+l.

Very strange, not a problem as in an issue came across it by accident... sure used ctrl+k when on a different machine [search box] but not on my box.
Maybe I should search about:config for refs. to yahoo....
Normally I use ? as a keyword for google search though gm [google maps] did not work

Make sure that browser.search.order.1 in about:config is set to Google and that browser.search.defaultenginename is also set to Google.

You're just afraid to admit that I was right for the first time in between posts 4000 and 5000.
