Just made a test with two Laptops (IBM/Lenovo T61) running Archlinux and Ubuntu 9.04.
Even though Ubuntu runs gnome and Arch runns Openbox it seems that Ubuntu starts faster than Arch?
And isn't there more services and stuff in a vanilla ubuntu installation than it is on Arch?
I have only added alsa hal fam gdm to the daemon list in /etc/rc.conf in Arch.
Is there a way to speed up the boot process?
Both Laptops were running EXT4 and had DHCP enabled. static might cut 1-2 sec of?

was arch faster before you put those daemons into your rc.conf? I think of all those gdm is the most time-wasting.
urxvtc / wmii / zsh / configs / onebluecat.net
Arch will not hold your hand

Yes but Ubuntu uses gdm as well don't they?

TBH, idc about boot up speed. I'll do it once every 3 days if even that. I've gone without rebooting for a couple of months with archlinux. This is just how I feel.
edit:
BTW: it's a good thing we're not on irc or I would "!bomb ftornell"... http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Speedup_boot

there are quiet a few topics here about this. search for boot, finit-arc, quick-init and bootchart.
there is also something in the wiki about tweaking for a faster boot.
look for the users duologic and adriano.
ok, now you have something to do for the next days...

What it feels like is different from what it actually is. I know a lot of people who thought my computer booted slower than their high end computer because of the text being displayed instead of some fancy splash screen. When we actually timed it, mine was faster though.
Also I wouldn't doubt Arch booting slower. Arch can suffer a lot if it is poorly configured. It's one thing used in all sorts of debates all the time like the difference between having total control of your system, but you also suffer your consequences. I mean in all distros, you do have complete power. Things like Ubuntu don't limit you. It's just that Arch offers for you to do what you want from the start (mostly) compared to Ubuntu where you're not going to be catering to all your configuration, be able to choose what goes in and out, and so on.

This is not a big issue for me, just a bit curious!

it would be helpful if you could post bootchart results. Otherwise it is difficult to say what is going on.

I have the same assumption, ubuntu 9.04 speed up a lot in comparison to 8.10. It's really really fast in booting. The question is: Is it because of upstart or the Init-RAM-Disk?
