I have a macbook 2,1 with a noisy cd drive and I rarely use it. It's especially annoying when it checks for cds after arch resumes from pm-suspend.
Is there any way to basically turn off the cd drive without unplugging the wire (which voids the really strict macbook warranty) so
that it will be quiet on resume? Also I use rEFIt and am ok with using the efi shell, however a linux-based fix would be best.

It could already help you with your issue if you figure out which cdrom drive you have, so which kernel-module it uses and blacklist that module.

I took out all the modules that could be driving my ch drive (sr-mod, scsi-mod, cdrom). Something is telling me that the cd drive noise-making intructions are in openefi (mac bios) or hardware.
Sorry it took me so long to reply.
