freeze on leaving kde

This might be a tough one.  First off, some background:

running i686, fully updated, with no xorg.conf

# lshwd       (excerpt)
00:02.0 Class 0300: Intel Corp.|82915G Express Chipset Family Graphics Controller (vesa)

After this set of updates:

intel-dri-7.4.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
mesa-7.4.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
xf86-video-intel-2.7.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
libgl-7.4.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
pycairo-1.8.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

I freeze when I leave kde (I do not use a display manager).  The problem is consistent.

If I rollback to:

intel-dri-7.4.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
mesa-7.4.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
xf86-video-intel-2.7.0-3-i686.pkg.tar.gz
libgl-7.4.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
pycairo-1.8.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

the problem is gone again.

To isolate the problem further, I tried updating only xf86-video-intel.  This forced the upgrade of both intel-dri and libgl, and the problem returned.

I have set these packages to be ignored in pacman.conf, which temporarily solves the problem,  but I am afraid that won't be a good solution as time goes on and more upgrades come out for xorg.  Of course, on the other hand perhaps more updates will fix the problem.

Anyone else noticing this or know of a fix?  Thanks.

Re: freeze on leaving kde

This happens to some packages sometimes

i had a package mucking up my vlc player some time back it was gone in the update

its the way arch runs the devs focus on updating and not patching broken bits and peaces but its most likely to fix itself in a later version.

just wait a bit for a later version of xorg

Re: freeze on leaving kde

Yeah I know.  I did read the archway article.  Just thought I'd check.

This may be related to kde.  I just tried upgrading all those files and running pekwm instead and I don't freeze at all when leaving pekwm.  Thanks for the reply.

Re: freeze on leaving kde

Hmm, yes sounds like one of the video drivers is conflicting with kde's shutdown procedure causing it to crash

you could continue to use pekwm while this continues.

also is there any crash report or does any error pop up on the screen

please check your log files in /var/log/ may be able to isolate an error and figure out exactly what is conflicting

Re: freeze on leaving kde

You might have the problem reported here:

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14748

In which case it got fixed yesterday.
