The -Syu --ignore vlc produces the following this day:
: Starting full system upgrade...
warning: vlc: ignoring package upgrade (0.9.9a-1 => 0.9.9a-2)
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: vlc: requires ffmpeg>=20081220
bash-3.2#
None of the EXTRA packages in my system were upgraded.
Cannot understand why the vlc dependencies prevented the upgrades when it is the ignored package!!!
Prediction...This year will be a very odd year!

that's because ffmpeg was updated. Either update vlc (I don't know why you use --ignore vlc) or rebuild it from abs (change the version of the ffmpeg depends to 0.5)

I have a modded vlc in my system built from abs download PKGBUILD.
It has always been ignored when using -Syu --ignore vlc.
To get it to ignore vlc today, I must also --ignore ffmpeg.
Why doesn't --ignore vlc actually mean --ignore vlc and all depends?
Perhaps a definition of the ignore process will help to understand.
It definitely doesn't make sense to me now....
