I noticed that I have a hard time picking a good mirror from arch's mirrorlist that you are presented at the beginning of the install process.
There should be an option to test each server and pick one out for you. If people are interested, I could even write it myself, since I know the relang team is busy

There's a python utility available post-installation to order the mirrors by speed: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Imp … rankmirror has the details.

While it would be handy for an install-time option it would a) need to be rewritten as python wouldn't be available and b) go against the Arch Way.

To be honest, I think a more general 'getting started' utility collection would be more useful. Somewhere in the installation/first boot could be a message pointing to a directory of arch goodies (some stuff on pacman performance is a great example) for users to try out.

So what you're suggesting is something along the lines of running rankmirrors before doing /arch/setup? better that then nothing

@haxit: I just ran rankmirrors on the livecd (it's in /usr/bin/rankmirrors) and it spat out can not find.... python Looks like they have rankmirrors but it can't actually run.

Well, they could have python on the livecd with rankmirrors and it would work then I was just making a suggestion as to what the program would be like.

The problem with rankmirrors is that it doesn't car if the repo is actually up to date and working, it just selects the mirror that is apparently the fastest one.
But it can be handy if you run it on a selection of known good mirrors, and to compile that list, http://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html and http://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus can be handy.

Edit: Also, there is no python on the install cd, so that's a slight issue

Xyne's reflector can rank based on speed and also limit to mirrors synced within an arbitrary time limit. It requires perl.
