Create DVD with dvd+vr format for standalone dvd recorder

Is there a way to create dvd's using the dvd+vr format to be playable on a stand alone DVD recorder.

I want to:
  1. combine several video files with different formats into one mpeg-?
  2. Create a dvd to be played on a stand alone dvd recorder (sony hx-900)
  3. Dub (copy) this file from the dvd to the sony hard drive.

I have been successful in creating the dvd using mencoder and dvdstyler which is playable on the sony but I cannot dub the dvd to the harddrive.  I am able to create a "dubable" dvd using windows and creator 7 as long as I set the dvd format to dvd+vr instead of dvd-video.  Since I usually don't have windows installed, I would like to find a way to do this just using linux.

I would appreciate any tips from people who have experience with or knowledge about the dvd+vr format.

Thanks
