I run a 64-bit laptop with a GMA965 intel card and two arch installs. One i686 and another x64_64. the i686 is the conservative one and I have only this week upgraded to the newest intel driver and enabled hotplugging. So now my xorg configuration is exactly the same on both installs.
There is however a radical difference in performance. I get twice as many fps in glxgears (I know it's not a benchmark but it gives you an appromixation anyway) and the i688 is just a lot snappier graphicswise.
How come there is such a big difference here? They even use the same xorg.conf.

It is strange. I have a similar configuration in my G45 based desktop and don't see any difference. I use 64-bit as my main system and have 32 bit in another partition with [testing] enabled.
Maybe there is a problem in your 64 bit system that prevents it from performing correctly. Take a look at the logs to see if you can find any difference.
