Minimize hard drive usage

Hello, I'm using a Dell Vostro with a 160GB HDD and was wondering how I could redice hard drive usage so that I could improve battery life.

Re: Minimize hard drive usage

I doubt that the battery would notice, but you might want to use as little resources as possible by using lightweight apps and not doing anything HDD intensive. Everything would load nicely into RAM (which of course also draws power) / ramdisk and your HDD could get herself a cup of coffee.

Re: Minimize hard drive usage

Laptop-mode-tools is very useful when trying to reduce hard drive activity. You also may want to consider mounting log files and browser cache into RAM or simply reduce log activity and choose a browser that doesn't use the harddisk as much as i.e. firefox.
But, of course, best is to buy a good SSD which comes with many other advantages than not having to bother about hard disk activity any more.
