kdesu not working at the start of KDE session

Right after the start of a new KDE session kdesu refused to work. When invoked in a console I got the following error message:

$ kdesu <application>
kdesu(4656)/kdesu (kdelibs) KDESu::KDESuPrivate::KCookie::getXCookie: No X authentication info set for display  ":0.0"

Then, without me doing anything (other than googling for the error message) it worked again. Has anyone else seen this, and what causes it?
