WEIRD CD/DVD rom problem.

I have hal-easy installed (to fix automounting problems caused by PolicyKit), but I have the same problem with regular hal as well.

I have two drives, one CD-RW and one DVD-ROM (They are both very old IDE drives)

ON THE DVD-ROM Drive:
I can mount and playback on only ONE BRAND of burned DVD's, but other brands of burned DVDs/CDs and Store bought DVDs/CDs won't mount or playback.  I have libdvdcss, libdvdnav libdvdread and codecs installed.

With other DVD's/CD's I get:

mount: block device /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

ON THE CDRW:
Nothing, doesn't matter if its store-bought/burned/brand I can't get to read/write/mount anything.

Same mount error here.

Any ideas?  Should I just buy new drives with a SATA interface? Will it help?  WTF is wrong here?

EDIT: Also I thought it might be a Master/Slave problem because I remembered that these drive are IDE, I tried switching the order and they appear in the correct order during boot on my IDE controller so I don't think thats an issue.

Re: WEIRD CD/DVD rom problem.

When you put the other brand of CD in, is there any dmesg output?  Also please post the last 50 or so lines of dmesg after you put the cd in.
That should tell you whether it's a hardware or mount problem.

Re: WEIRD CD/DVD rom problem.

Could be a hardware problem.  Notice I said COULD.  See if you can borrow a cd drive off a friend and test it.  If it works, keep it. smile

Re: WEIRD CD/DVD rom problem.

I think the problem is in your fstab.
Your cd and dvd should be commented and you should have ro under options.
Under type should be auto. [my cd/dvd r/w's are ide also]
I don't see that in your fstab.
Here's mine:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information

Re: WEIRD CD/DVD rom problem.

@windtalker, nope tried your suggestion even though commented lines are ignored I thought I'd give it a shot and I have the same problem.  I guess I need to try and find some drives to test out.

I installed a lightscribe to one of my boxes and havn't had any problems with it to date.

Re: WEIRD CD/DVD rom problem.

Hi, i was going to start a new topic, but i have the same problem than him. When i put a CD or DVD in the cd-rom it works, but when i put an AUDIO CD i get thw same error mesage. The auto-mount doesn't work with audio cds and if i try to mount them whit this command in a terminal

sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /media/cd

i get this:

mount: block device /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

But, with data cd or dvd i don't have any problems and que work fine :S (?)

Mi fstab is similar to this:

#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

#/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,busgid=108,busmode=0775,devgid=108,devmode=0664 0 0

Thanks

FYI: audio cd's can't be mounted/browsed, you have to play them in your audio player.

Re: WEIRD CD/DVD rom problem.

I used to be able to play audio cd with Audacious via preferences menu.  No more.  Amarok no longer supports audio cd play.  In KDE4.x(from kdemod) KSCD wont play audio cd in either drive. It will eject cds. Kde3 had kscd that worked.
The only program that plays audio cd is VLC by selecting disk>audio cd>/dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1. But sound is choppy.
Putting audio cd in either drive opens plugged-in window asking to extract audio track with k3b. No right click and play with option.
Is it assumed that people don't play cds on pc while they work in Linux? (To be fair had similar problem in Slackware12.2. Ubuntu,Suse and Mandriva play cd with Audacious.)  Anyone else able to play audio cds with another program?
I remember 8 yrs ago or more that my cd recorder suggested which cdrs to use so it's not suprising to see the earlier comment about only some cdrs working.  It should still be true that cdrs should match the speed range of the recorder though.  Hope this helps.
