Arch installed - but no sound, no video [Solved]

I finally installed Arch, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the sound and video to work. Your instructions are very complete, but I can't figure it out.

I have a nvidia FX5200 video, I installed the nvidia 173xx driver for.
Sound is onboard Intel

Any clues?

Thanks

make sure you don't have snd_pcsp loaded, that you are a member of audio, and that main and pcm are unmuted and turned up.

I have main and pcm unmuted and turned up, but where do I find the other two settings?

Any errors? Video playing but no sound? If you have ALSA try 'alsamixer' and check the settings - unmute and crank it up a bit.

That's it! Front_Center.wav came it loud and clear. Thanks smile

Now on to the video...

Have you typed '"groups" and "lsmod" (w/o the quotes)?

Re: Arch installed - but no sound, no video [Solved]

How is video not working? Do you have X running or are you stuck at a console? Do video files just not play when you click on them? Does a program even open to play the video? Maybe there's just a black box where the video should be? There really are too many possibilities for us to just guess at.

When I run the X command to see the x on the screen, the screen is blank with no way to return to prompt so I have to hit the reboot button to start over. I have installed all the video files. something in the settings are not set up right. I added nvidia to the xorg file after I installed the nvidia 173xx driver.
What else could it be?

groups brings up:
lp wheel video audio optical storage power users davek

Ismod brings up a larger list of things... under agpgart  = 29332 2 nvidia, intel_agp
what would I look for or change?

Do you have
- xf85-input-mouse
- xf86-input-keyboard
- xf86-input-evdev
installed and could you post ~/.xinitrc and /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
Have you configured X, if yes - how?

Re: Arch installed - but no sound, no video [Solved]

Have you seen this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg

I have a geforce 6200 card and found that I got better performance with nvidia-96xx.  Also the minimal xorg.conf helped.

Edit: Actually, I just tried the nvidia-173xx again--it's been a while--and it does work with my card and better fps too, but my urxvt terminal, using a tiling wm, looks better with 96xx.

Re: Arch installed - but no sound, no video [Solved]

If you just run 'X', all you're ever going to get is a blank screen with an X for a cursor. Instead of rebooting, you should be able to press ctrl+alt+backspace to kill X,  or switch to your console using ctrl+alt+F1 and then press ctrl+c to kill X.
You should try running startx instead of X or Xorg. At least this way, a basic window manager (twm) should start up.

startx first looks for a file called ~/.xinitrc to see which commands to run after X is started. If it doesn't find this file, it defaults to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc which starts twm, a clock, and a few terminals. If you want more than this, you need to decide which desktop environment or window manager you want, install it, and set it up to start instead of twm.

The beginner's guide covers this in Part IV and there are also individial wiki articles on most window managers and desktop environments that should fill in the blanks.

In short, I don't think anything is broken, it's just not set up yet! smile

yes, with startx I get the terminals and the clock. I'll look over the other sections again. Does that mean I can install XFCE now?

Re: Arch installed - but no sound, no video [Solved]

do you need this option:

Step 2: ~/.xinitrc (again)

As non-root user, edit your /home/username/.xinitrc to specify the DE you wish to use. This will allow you to use startx/xinit from the shell, in the future, to open your DE/WM of choice:

$ nano ~/.xinitrc

Uncomment or add the 'exec ..' line of the appropriate desktop environment/window manager. Some examples are below:

For the Xfce4 desktop environment:

exec startxfce4

When I  go to nano /home/davek/.xinitrc
its a blank file, is it supposed to be?  And what is DE?

I just want to add Xfce so when I reboot it boots to Xfce to login. How is that done?

I'm going to install Xfce4 and see how it goes, I figure if I need that option I can do it later.

Re: Arch installed - but no sound, no video [Solved]

Everything in Xfce installed except gtk-themes : not found in sync db

Starting hal abstraction layer [failed]

then when I ran $startxfce4 I get this error:

Unable to contact settings server
Failed to execute dbus launch to autolaunch D-Bus session

How do I correct this?

How exactly are you trying to start hal ?

That's a good question. I thought I had it set in the rc.d file, but I not sure.

Please tell us what have 'pacman -Qs dbus' and 'pacman -Qs ^hal' shown you. Posting your rc.conf could also help.

'rc.d is a directory . 'rc.conf' is the file .

You should have something like :
DAEMONS=(@syslog-ng @network @crond @netfs hal @fam)

What are the benefits of '@syslog-ng'? No log = use a crystal ball, right?

"@" for background .
"!" for force-disable .

My real daemons array :
DAEMONS=(@syslog-ng @network @crond @netfs hal @oss @avahi-daemon  @openntpd @cups !lircd !lircmd @mpd @sshd portmap nfslock @nfsd @fam)
