Need a Replacement Graphics Card for Light Gaming

My current 7800GT overheats when gaming or even just running GLXgears. I need a replacement of similar or slightly better performance (preferably less than $100) for an nforce4 SLI board. How are the ATI drivers right now? I've heard they still have issues. I'm kind of wary of Nvidia due to the possibly wide spread defects. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Nvidia … ,6248.html

It seems sort of lose-lose. Which graphics card would you recommend?

Edit: Do either of these seem reasonable? Which is better? The 2600XT?

Re: Need a Replacement Graphics Card for Light Gaming

Lot of them out there, got the nvidia 9600 gso myself for $40 (after rebate).  Good card for your gaming basics.  But if you want to got with ATi the 4770, got about the same overall performance.  Wrote about it-here:

Do PCI-E 2.0 cards work with PCI-E slots? If not, I don't think the 4770 is an option.

Using catalyst since long (hd4850, 9800pro before that).
I would not recomment ati, it is still a nightmare.

Everything from having to holding back updates, video tearing to simple problems with wine.
I suppose holding back packages and only playing native linux games works for the most part, but not worth it imho, better get an nvidia card.

intrados:  from what I read, there is no evidence that this potentially widespread problem effects desktop pc's. I don't think that you would be running a risk by buying an nvidia card.

really hope that this problem isn't that widespread, could potentially destroy nvidia, then what would happen to linux gamers?

Re: Need a Replacement Graphics Card for Light Gaming

You might be able to fix your current nvidia.

Maybe try removing and re-attaching the heatsink/fan setup and cleaning ou the fan. You'll probably need some thermal paste to re-attach the heatsink, but it doesnt cost much. Keep in mind that graphics cards can run really hot, some have max temps over 150C iirc..

I wouldnt worry about that nvidia thing, it's probably not an issue now.

Dang! 150C?  Oh hoho!  Hot enought to cook a meal on.  I've seen that nvidia chips are made to withstand tolerances of 120C but anything above 100C will eventually cook the memory and eventually burn out the card.  But I agree with iphitus try to clean the card, and don't be distracted by that one post.
