Does it worth uninstall xfree86 and install XORG?

Well, I'm running here in my arch linux 0.7 XFREE86.
Does it worth to replace it with xorg?
Why? Can I have problems? What is the diference between them?
Grazie mille!
Rafael

Re: Does it worth uninstall xfree86 and install XORG?

well, switching between xorg and xfree is this hard:

pacman -R xfree; pacman -S xorg

the main difference for the end users would be the config file - it's called xorg.conf, and you have to change a value in the keyboard section to make X work smile

To err is human... to really foul up requires the root password.

IMHO it's worth switching to Xorg. It has some great "fireworks" like transparency and shadows. If you have nvidia, you should really try the new extensions. For the details on how to enable the new features, do a forum search.

the most important difference is the license model though i think.  lol

just copying your XF86Config file to xorg.conf in the same directory should do the trick.

Re: Does it worth uninstall xfree86 and install XORG?

yes, as far as xfree86 is concerned - it no longer exists.... upgrading from xfree86 to xorg is the same as going from "bob 0.6" to "bob 0.7" - it's basically just an upgrade...

the x project was taken over by xorg, hence the name change

Xorg was a fork of Xfree86 from my understanding.

maybe sarah31 is right, but:
http://x.org/XOrg_background.html
kinda implies that they took over.... fork or not, they are the official X implementation right now...

Re: Does it worth uninstall xfree86 and install XORG?

thats why i used was. i know when they "started out" it was a fork off  XFree86 before all the whining about XFree86's license change.

i tuned all that cruft out and changed over when it was made very easy to make the transition with as little effort on my part (which was around the itme Judd moved XFree to extra and "promoted" Xorg to current.
