(SOLVED) cannot get sound to work on multiple programs

im using the most current version of kde 4.2, and alsa with hda audio

snd_hda_intel

sound works great, but i cannot get it work on more than one program at at time.  i tried pulseaudio, i tried esd and i blacklisted oss from my rc.conf.

every time i tried loading esd it would just fallback to my hda audio.

im not sure what to do now...i am running arch x64, may this have something to do with it?

any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Start playing sound in one application, and then try using the terminal to start another program that requires sound from a terminal. Can you copy/paste the resulting error message?

Don't use ESD and PulseAudio, the only thing they make are problems.

Do you have a ~/.asoundrc or a /etc/asound.conf? If yes, try to delete them.

wow, deleting ~/.asoundrc did it!!  i am soooo stoked!  thank you very much.  maybe someone should add that tip to the Arch Wiki...the best part is all i need is alsa, so i can keep that package count low.
