ATI graphics card overheatingheat on 64bit? [SOLVED](for 32bit only)

Hi everyone.

I have a mobility radeon 3450 in my hp pavilion laptop (dv5-1112ea). I was on Archlinux for x86_64 as this laptop has a AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor (zm-82).

Everything was ok until I started working on a opengl application. Whenever I ran my application, the laptop would get extremely hot, fps in the app would decrease gradually and generally the laptop would shut down due overheating.

I was using the catalyst drivers (9.4) from AUR.

Recently HP released bios F.33 with ACPI support on linux for this laptop (whis way there was no need for a modified DSDT). This helped a bit in keeping the laptop a little cooler and getting thermal readings (passing acpi_osi="Linux" parameter to the kernel from grub). However the problem continued.

I tested the graphic card with Ubuntu 9.04 for x86_64 and the same happened: bad performace, overheating, shutdown. Then I tried it on Ubuntu for 32bit and, voila, the graphics performance got a lot better! And overheating also disapeared! Both ubuntu instalations where 9.04 and catalyst 9.4 (as kernel was 2.6.8).

Hmmm... i supose the thread is only partially solved: I am running 32bit Archlinux with great overal performance and excellent 3d performace now with kernel 2.6.8 and catalyst 9.4 from aur. Anyway, I just wanted to share this experience.

Has anyone had a similar experience with catalyst drivers on 64bit?
