VLC playback runs slow on the console

I can play videos in mplayer fine through the framebuffer on the console using stock 2.6.29 kernel, and nvidia ti4600 graphics card, but the playback in vlc is choppy, and the colours look washed out. vlc seems to default to playing on the framebuffer if launched from the console, but I have also tried:

--vout fb --fbdev /dev/fb0 --fb-hw-accel
--vout fb --fbdev /dev/fb0 --no-fb-hw-accel

The option to turn hardware acceleration off makes the playback a bit smoother but the colours are still odd. Do I need to compile vlc with directfb support, or is this already compiled in?
