Sluggish laptop with Xorg

Hey,
I just bought a laptop a few weeks ago and I installed the 64 bit Arch.  When running fluxbox, it was running very slowly.  Firefox windows dragged, Mplayer was unusable for video files that were fine on my desktop that is less powerful, VLC ran alright as long as the window was tiny.  In general the laptop runs extremely sluggishly, is overheated all the time and its battery lasts about 20 - 30 mins.  My brother, who bought the exact same laptop as me is running Ubuntu 9.04 i686, which runs smoothly with about 4 hours battery life.  I tried a live CD of it and a March Linux live CD, both of which ran very smoothly on my laptop.  So, I talked to a friend and he suggested it might be since I was running 64 bit.  So I installed 32 bit Arch and it is running jsut as slow.  I've tried running both fluxbox and blackbox under the 64 version and the same results.  I am guessing it has something to do with Xorg, but my knowledge of these things is minimal.  Anyway, I'm attaching what I think is relevant.

Have you tried a non-blackbox-based WM? Does you laptop heat up after a while (30 seconds) running fluxbox?

I just tried xfce4.  It was the same. It happens no matter what I run by the way and it is never better or worse.  It is very static in speed.  I can run 20 programs or 2 and it is about the same speed.  Thanks guys.
