Detect Analog Modem

This PC I have http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prod … ct=3659700 seems to have a phone jack in the back. I think it might be an analog modem to allow me to send/receive faxes. That would be nice as I don't have a 'real' fax machine.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? And if it's a maybe, how can I try to detect its presence? The Beginner's Guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … alog_Modem says to check out http://www.linmodems.org/ and there it says to run their program. Should I go ahead and do that? smile

Re: Detect Analog Modem

What I actually want to do with this modem (I think it's a modem) is send/receive faxes. I tried to install this http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hylafax but when I added a modem I got:

Probing for best speed to talk to modem:
Unable to deduce DTE-DCE speed; check that you are using the
correct device and/or that your modem is setup properly. If
all else fails, try the -s option to lock the speed.

and then faxsetup says things like /bin/vgetty is not found as well as egetty and /usr/sbin/sendmail

I think I am missing something basic here. sad
