No GUI Login..Failed connect.. /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket[SOLVED]

Trying to get my Gnome nm-applet working today, I edited my /etc/dbus-1/system.d/ NetworkManager.conf and nm-applet.conf files, and backed up both prior to changes.

When I rebooted, I got to my (gdm?) GUI login, the cursor is blinking in the dialog box, but no response to mouse or keyboard.

I have another Linux OS's on this computer, so I logged into one, and using Nautilus as Root, I restored my NetworkManager.conf and nm-ammlet.conf backups in Arch.

Try to log into Arch again, and same as before restoring backups so I double checked them, all looks good. I did however notice that there are hidden files in my Arch /etc/dbus-1/system.d/ NetworkManager.conf and nm-applet.conf. Same file names as the ones I'm working with except a ~ replacing some of the end of the "real" filenames.

Then I ran out of time before having to go to work.....

Is the ~ thing normal?

Have I hosed some other settings or files from editing the /etc/dbus-1/system.d/ NetworkManager.conf and nm-applet.conf files?

Would anyone know what I did wrong and be kind enough to help me out?

I'm at work now, and have SSH-VNC access to the Arch directories and files. I really can't do much from here though. I'm just looking for some ideas for when I get home.

Edit to add info:

I noticed my backups files had some "<" and ">" missing from some lines. Example:

<some criptic and confusing stuff "like this"

so I tried to make sure all the lines had a

<at the beginning and end "like this">

I tried both ways and still no login.

Re: No GUI Login..Failed connect.. /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket[SOLVED]

UPDATE

I edited the /etc/inittab run level to #3 using one of my other distros in this computer.

That allowed me to log into a root shell. I executed the following commands:

#pacman -Sy networkmanager network-manager-applet

Then I:

cd /etc
nano inittab

and changed runlevel back to 5 and exited nano, rebooted and same problem!!!

Next I'm thinking if I knew what to look for, the /var/log files might tell me something. Below is the bottom 3 lines of the errors log.

Jun 10 12:11:19 Arch2009p2 kernel: ata1: softreset failed (device not ready)

Re: No GUI Login..Failed connect.. /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket[SOLVED]

It doesn't sound like this is a network manager related problem. More like Xorg is not recognizing your keyboard (and mouse?). Please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files.

Are you using Xorg hotplugging? If not, do you have the xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse packages installed?

Re: No GUI Login..Failed connect.. /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket[SOLVED]

I'm not sure on the "hotplugging"

do you have the xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse packages

No I didn't, but I do now and no difference.

Is it possible an update I didn't pay attention to actually broke xorg?

I made the edits, rebooted, and upon having problems, thought it was what I had done rather than possibly something else.

Edit to add info.......

I notice something like "fail  hardware abstraction layer" flash by when trying GUI login.

I logged into root shell and startx | less

I see

d-bus not built with -rdynamic . . . . .   unable to print backtrack

and

"frame 13 gnome session"

is the last numbered listing followed by:

"error setting MTRR invalid argument (22)"

Re: No GUI Login..Failed connect.. /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket[SOLVED]

This morning, I reloaded/updated:
hal
dbus
libglade
xorg
gdm

Still not able to GUI log in. Same no mouse, keyboard, but cursor blinking in dialog box.

From my /var/log/errors.log

Re: No GUI Login..Failed connect.. /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket[SOLVED]

Logged into root shell.

pacman -Sy nss-mdns

Solved my issues regarding GUI log in.

Now I'd like to know why if someone would have an idea.

My guess....permission issue.

avahi-daemon[2897]: WARNING: No NSS support for mDNS detected, consider installing nss-mdns!

Although this had shown up prior to my GUI login problem, and the way the warning says "consider installing" I didn't consider nss-mdns essential.

Re: No GUI Login..Failed connect.. /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket[SOLVED]

I had the same problem, installing nss-mdns revealed I hadn't enough free space, freeing some disk space solve this problem smile
