WoW, a load of new Filesystem's, network stack's, yet another security framework and improved boot up with fastboot

Not really an issue is it? Dumping this in GNU/Linux discussion.

I've turned it off already ;-)
[combuster@vostro ~]$ uname -a
Arch vostro 2.6.30-DELL #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jun 10 13:07:43 CEST 2009 x86_64
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5670 @ 1.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
I've tried out turning kms on intel by default and it kinda degraded my performanse (250 fps in glxgears) and it comes up rather late compared to putting intel_agp and i915 in mkinitcpio... Now I've redone my kernel image with mkinitcpio and it's back to normal... So far no problems, me happy

What about KMS, is it gonna be allowed by default in 2.6.30? not sure, but I saw that in 2.6.29 it's not right now.
Thanks

It is allowed by default and it was in 2.6.29 also but u need to compile it with support for that option (2.6.29-ARCH wasn't, dunno why)...
Offline
I hope it's gonna be reality now, 2.6.30 in Arch KMS default enabled ( hopefully intel GMA965 will be better ). Simply not sure about compiling kernel.
Offline
Well it's not gonna get better because, as I've said earlier, relying solely on kernel for kms gives performance problems (it degraded glxgears result by 50%)... For now it is still better to manualy load i915 and intel_agp and rebuild the kernel image. But for that matter turning on this option in kernel config is safe...

Too bad AMD/ATi Catalyst users still have to wait until someone writes a patch before it can be used.

Well it just crossed my mind that turning off kms by default wasnt such a bad move because there are still some people that use EXA instead of UXA, so disabling kms as default untill 2.8.0 intel video driver arrives is smart thing to do... After that I think it will be pointless to do so...

Finally, I want a better quality KMS

It's getting bloated, but initrd.img saves the day

I can't wait to try this out

I briefly read the changelog in human form available at kernelnewbies.org.
I am curious what's up with the fastboot thing, hehe. That came in 2.6.29 so I am wondering if this update means it is used by default now or if they just made further improvements to it. I guessing further improvement, which would be nice.
Other than that, I am not too interested in anything else. I was a bit shocked to see all the new filesystems.
I'll bake 2.6.30 tonight and maybe show a bootchart and maybe some quit benchmarking, but nothing too major.

When will it be in the core/testing repository?

When it is ready..... The kernel guy(s) are usually quite good about getting the kernel into [testing] quickly.

Please don't ask such questions... Allan's answer is the only exact answer you'll ever get on this.

Well I can say it's very stable... I havent tried out fastboot and I dont have a desire to cause speeding up the boot process didn't brought anything good for me in the past 2-3 months...

uh?
The glxgear non issue http://qa-rockstar.livejournal.com/7869.html
As for KMS not enabled by default, this is true, but you need not recompiling a kernel with whatever options: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=69083&p=1
Hey, Arch Linux is a nice and simple and easy to use distribution. And I just love KMS, but I tend to reboot my laptop instead of hibernating it.

Any different???
The glxgear non issue
Yeah I know, but urt is chocking to death with 15fps so I would say that enabling kms as default option in kernel vs loading i915 early goes in favour of the second option for now...
but you need not recompiling a kernel with whatever options
Yes you have to if you want kms enabled natively in kernel, enabling kms afterwards ur just forcing i915 driver to load instead of standard fb driver...
