Alsa seemed to start when arch booted, but it never plays any sound. When I did the aplay front_center, nothing happened either.

Well, there's a lot that could be wrong. We're going to need more details.
When you try an aplay or speaker-test do you get any errors, or is there just no sound output?
If you get errors, post the output of:
cat /proc/asound/cards
If you don't get errors, run alsamixer and make sure everything is at an appropriate volume and unmuted. (Pressing the m button toggles mute)

run alsa mixer and make sure the second headphone is on mute (headphone jack sense) and see if it works after that. (that was what was wrong with my alsa setup , it might not work on yours)

I'm Intel also.
On my system in alsamixer,, LineJac had to be muted to get sound.
