I'm currently using Reiser3 for /var, but want to make it ext3 (deterioration of Reiser support, etc.).
I want to confirm that I'm doing the right thing, and shouldn't lose data this way:
1) Boot from liveCD (Ubuntu or something), and mount local filesystems.
2) cd /var && tar czvf /home/chris/var.tar.gz * .*
3) Unmount partitions.
4) Use gparted to wipe /var partition and write as ext3.
5) Mount partitions.
6) Change fstab options.
7) cd /var && tar xzvf /home/chris/var.tar.gz
Should this work fine, and catch all files in /var? Or do I have to watch out for something else?

I did it that way to move some partitions from ext3 to jfs, but just copied without tar.
I had no problems.
