A few questions about Arch

Hi, ive just installed Arch Linux along with xfce4 and i love it. I have only a few questions:

2- I installed xorg-xdm, i reboot my PC and xdm appears, but, i type my username and password and press enter. The window turns black and the xdm appears again!
3- How can i install java plugin for web browsers?

Re: A few questions about Arch

Welcome to Arch.

0. First thing to be done is a wiki search.
1. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fir … ul_plugins and http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fir … ot_working
2. Sorry, I don't use xdm. You may want to look at /var/log/Xorg.log or something to that effect.
3. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Java

xdm

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XDM

java plugin is in the repo:

pacman -S jre [may be why you can't use youtube or whatever it was you can't access.]

you may also want to install gstreamer0.10 if it isn't installed.

You can also add shaman and see what's in the repo graphically.

pacman -S shaman

I don't have a Java plugin installed (in fact, I'm using uzbl), and I can go to YouTube and watch videos just fine.

With regards to your XDM issue, I suspect that you don't have an .xinitrc.

Re: A few questions about Arch

I solved the flashplugin, i was just needing to chmod some folders. tongue
I installed java and it works fine.

I do have a .xinitrc. Logging in XDM with root works fine, but i cant log in with other users.

Re: A few questions about Arch

XDM doesn't use .xinitrc, it uses .xsession, but your gubbins in there and it will work big_smile

.xinitrc is just for running using startx.

Just copy the one from the root user, and you will be, as they say, laughing.

exec startxfce4

should do the trick.

oops... I'm using SLiM, where the default behavior is to source .xinitrc.

.xinitrc is just for running using startx.

I know what you mean, but for the sake of other people who may read this, I'll take issue with your phrasing: .xinitrc is for running xinit, which is called by startx.  It also happens to be sourced by SLiM (but you can change that in /etc/slim.conf).
