Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

Dear Arch,

I installed my alsa as according to the beginners guide since I am not up to speed with all that jazz - as things stand I can get audio out of VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer. Can anyone help me?

Thanks smile

Do you have all the codecs installed?

pacman -S gstreamer0.10-bad gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins gstreamer0.10-good gstreamer0.10-good-plugins gstreamer0.10-ugly gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins gstreamer0.10-base gstreamer0.10-base-plugins gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

Re: Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

Indeed I had most of those installed - unfortunately the ones I was missing didn't solve the problem. Rhythmbox shows the song playing but no sound comes out (I know the sound works, am listening to tunes on youtube atm) and mplayer jsut refuses to do anything

Can you run mplayer via the terminal and post up any errors? If there aren't any error's you might have to check your sound settings.

Re: Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

Sorry for threadjacking hope you dont mind, here's my output for rhythmbox:

(rhythmbox:3267): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)

`mplayer -ao alsa foobar.avi`  (replace foobar.avi with any media file with sound)
See if it gives you any errors.

When I do this the file plays fine in the terminal, clear as crystal - it's just in the GUI that it doesn't play

I'm bumping this because it's an obnoxious issue I wish I didn't have, and because I'm not the only one with this problem

Re: Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

Which GUI are you using for mplayer?  I use SMPLayer, which works perfectly out of the box, but if you go into the preferences, under general there is an Audio tab, make sure it is set to ALSA.  That should sort your problem out, chances are the gui is specifying a different output device when calling mplayer.

Re: Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

unfortunately it doesn't - oh the sound of silence

right now mplayer, movie player and rhythmbox are all exhibiting the same behaviour - showing that a track is playing but not putting out any sound

mp3blaster and vlc work fine though

Re: Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

its not a codec or sound device issue, it has something to do with permission as I found through rigorous googling, However someone suggested to install libofa but that doesn't help either. my gstreamer-properties are all set fine!

Re: Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

to make sure its a permission issue...try "gksu mplayer". If the program works as root you will need to change the permissions for it. Make sure your user is in the audio group also.

gpasswd -a USERNAME audio

Re: Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

Good news pete! I solved the problem by randomly tweakin stuffs lol. I just uninstalled gstreamer0.10-pulse
Then did a gstreamer-properties, selected alsa and did a reboot! It fixed the problem. Hope this works for u as well.

Re: Audio in VLC but not Rhythmbox or MPlayer

I was very hopeful - but now in rhythmbox the progress bar doesn't even move sad Audio works through VLC and mp3blaster but not through mplayer, rhythmbox or flash plugins in firefox
