Hey guys. If you, like me, having been waiting to have KMS enabled on your laptop and be able to change resolutions to match your external monitor, today is your lucky day (or at least mine).
I have Dell Vostro 1400, GM965, 1440x900 lcd, running as i686. I already had KMS enabled. With xf86-video-intel-newest 2.7.99.901-3, but I still couldn't change my internal lcd resolution. Downloading xf86-video-intel-git from aur fixed this.
1. Get xf86-video-intel-git from aur (I have 20090625 installed). Everything else from Extra should suffice (I have intel-dri 7.4.2-1, xorg 1.6.1.901-1, kernel26 2.6.30-5)
2. Change resolution with xrandr. (still no panel fitting support, though). e.g.
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1024x768
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x768
xrandr --fb 1024x768
3. Party

Great that it works for you that way. I didn't even need to install the intel driver from aur, it already worked with the packages from extra. I have the same card (GM965).

Huh, and here I thought this would be news. I had searched google, the forums, and a few different bug trackers and never saw anyone say this issue was fixed (though I did see a few different predictions of fixes). Oh well. Maybe someone will still find this useful.
