kernel 2.6.30?? i have asus eee pc 1000. arch linux i686 with 2.6.29 kernel. is it ok if i update? is there any problem? i saw in other topics that there is problem with the webcam, with the sound and other... plz tell me your opinion!

Arch follows rolling release. To update or not is your choice. If you are worried wait and see the forum for any problem and solution. (I did a full upgrade in Del mini 9, I got a problem with Broadcom wirless, and also solution in aur). Some where in this forum says "new release means old bugs fixed and new bugs surfing"

I never had any issues with kernel upgrades. That said, you can always rollback to an older kernel if things don't work out.

thanks you ill wait 1 or 2 weeks and ill update if its ok for me! i hope that a eee pc 1000 user will post a reply to me! that would be nice

Look at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Downgrade_packages
If package is removed from cache use http://schlunix.org/archlinux/ to find older packages.

Just FTR, Dan (Toofishes), an Arch developer, runs an eeepc repo with a custom .30-eee kernel (not sure about the model). you may want to look into that.

oh yes! i forgot about that! i did the same whene i wanted to make smaller the home partition and make bigger the root! (with ubuntu cd) thanks!

i know that its not the same to make changes to your partitions and bring back a damaged unbootable enviroment but youre right! ill think about it a bit more and then ill upgrade my kernel

It is pretty simple to perform a chroot:
1) Put in the Arch live cd
2) Boot
3) mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/ (where X is the letter of the hard disk and Y the number of the partition: i.e. sda1)
3) mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
4) mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc
5) mount -o bind /sys /mnt/sys
6) chroot /mnt/

Then you can proceed at installing the old kernel by running

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/OLD_KERNEL_NAME.pkg.tar.gz

After chrooting I was always told to run a :

env-update && source /etc/profile

Is that not needed in Arch?

i did the upgrade! all fine but the alsa deamon did not start whene i reboot...

@lifeafter2am: Mm, now that I think about it, I remember something like that from my Gentoo days, but I've never ran those commands in Arch and everything worked.

only one file and the extension is conf
