[manolos@arch modprobe.d]$ ls -A
ndiswrapper.conf

only one file and the extension is conf

Try creating a new file /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf with the line

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Re: kernel update! is it safe?

Run as normal user alsamixer and unmute all channels by pressing m and increase the volume, then, as root, run "alsactl store".

Re: kernel update! is it safe?

No, it's better to keep alsa in daemons since it will restore your previously saved levels; just remember that when alsa screws up you can repeat this procedure and everything will be fine cool

Re: kernel update! is it safe?

How are you performing shutdown / reboot?

Re: kernel update! is it safe?

I guess it is something related with how you launch gdm.
Do you have gdm in your daemons? If yes, remove it from there and launch gdm from inittab as explained here -> http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Add … tab_Method

Be sure to edit the default runlevel and the default display manager.

Re: kernel update! is it safe?

Yep, it seams the source of the problems is gdm then; follow the inittab approach.

i did the edit in inittab and deleted the gdm from deamons but it starts with no gui or something. i had to login and write "xinit" and then "gnome-session". hmm
