linux hangs

Hi, i have a very strage problem. My laptop hangs and i do not have any ideea why. Sometimes it hangs after i boot, sometimes when i watch a movie, sometimes when is idle and the screen is turned off. I activated SysRq but is not working. I need some tips to debug this problem, logs or anything.

I think this problem started after i unpluged the cables from my laptop and moved it, i have a PCMCIA Realteck Ethernet card and i noticed that has someprobles in linux(network hangs but only in debian).  All the times the laptop hangs the cable was pluged in this card but i do not know if this is the problem)
I tried to ping the laptop and is not responding so is not only Xorg frozen.
I am uptodate, runng only stable software. I searched on google about realtek problems but I found only old stuff.
Same is happening in Mandriva Linux.
IS there a way to find what is wrong???

Well if its completely random that would lead me to believe it is hardware related.  Have you looked through some of the logs in /var/log/ to see if you notice anything that is the same right after all the freezes happen?

I had another freeze. I was not at my laptop so the computer was idlle,i had setup kde to use Presentation profile in power save and the screensaver was not enabled and the display was on, i read the time of the clock and read all the logs. It was nothing there at that time,nothing the computer was idlle and nothing happend. Is there a way to increase the messages log from the kernel? The dmesq had no time stamps...
Any help is apreciatred, i am afraid not to broke my laptop with so many forced reboots.

This happens with my Sony Vaio PCG-K76P, but didn't happen with kernel versions older than about 2.6.20 as far as I know. The only solution in my case is to boot using the kernel parameters "noacpi acpi=off noapm apm=off", but then of course I lose wireless and battery information. That kept me crash free for a long time, but now the Radeon 9200PRO causes many lockups sad I get lockups if I try to watch video using XV, and even had it lockup the other night while developing an OpenGL engine. That laptop really hates Linux.

Check these things:

1. I got random lockups due to the stack protector feature of the 2.6.30 kernel series. This mainly showed up when plugging my 3g usb modem.
2. cpufreq. Something's very fishy with this. I had to disable it (at least with 2.6.30) to get stable operation of my lappy.

I hope it helps.

I am brand new to Arch and do not yet have Arch installed -- I can only offer generic advice.

Does your system have sshd installed and enabled?  If so, the next time it freezes, try to ssh into your box from another machine (If it is a windows box, you can use PuTTY [FOSS])  If you can connect in that way, you can at least perform an orderly shutdown.  You can also look around for clues ( /proc/interrupt).  If this works, try performing a reboot command in order to restart without powering down the system.   If it shuts down, but hangs during the reboot without having powered down, the hardware is in a strange state.   This is a common situation with Intel Video and direct rendering enhancements in recent kernels.

Another couple of suggestions:

- run memtest overnight
- run the computer without X and see whether you get any more lockups
- check all the other logs

You said that the box locks after you boot - at which stage?
