disappeared dvd burner

Sometimes one of my dvd-burners (first pata master) after the boot is undetected: no device node nor (obviously) symlinks are created in /dev. It happened a couple of times - the strange thing is that "cdrdao scanbus" shows both the drives (while K3b shows only one of them). I don't think it's an hardware problem since the burner works flawlessy and the bios recognizes it. A reboot fixes the issue, anyway.
I tried unloading and reloading sr_mod and cdrom kernel modules, and restarting hal and udev but all without any effect.
Does anybody have an idea about the possible causes of the "disappearing drive"? There's a way to get my burner back without rebooting?
Thanks in advance for your time.
