archlinux boots into ramfs$ command line

i just updated my system using pacman -Syu and when i rebooted into the new kernel i got this strange error. upon logging in with an old arch CD i had lying around and mounting drive /dev/sda1 and my files and everything seem to be okay. i cant seem to fix whatever the error might be but i am almost certain it was somthing in the update. i can provide any information you might want upon request thanks for having a look!

the system is telling me it cannot create a root device on /dev/sda1 for some reason and my modprobe.conf is now modprobe.conf.pacsave does this have anything to do with it?

i have done more research and i beleive it is realted to a bug i am experiancing and i suppose ill just re install arch tonight

just an idea i might be wrong, but maybe some modules are missing for your hard disk(s) from MODULES in mkinitcpio.conf.  i solved similar problem to yours a few days ago, check my post in an other thread.

okay thank you both and no i dont beleive i am using fastboot
so i read your post and i think i got a jist of it.... i am, however not familiar with system recovery and am going to have to do some research on chroot before i try this any pointers would also be greatly apreciated

i currently use the sd? naming system on my hard drives any idea on what modules ill have to add to mkinitcpio.conf?

chrooting: e.g. you can find multiple documents writing about it in the system recovery section of archlinux-wiki. but i am sure a websearchengine would also give lot of results.

finding proper module: i had to play with settings a bit. as i already written in other post, i runned 'mkinitcpio -M' when archinstallcd system booted. that listed modules found via autodetection. see the manual of mkinitcpio for more info..

okay i will try this.... i can mount my /dev/sda1 with the live cd and edit files that way which is how i have been doing things and how i plan to back up my data in case i need to re install anytime soon

it says that mkinitcpio -M is not a command D:.. i think its because my arch install cd is from 2008

strange. my installdisk is also from 2008 (october) and it has mkinitcpio command.
then try lsmod instead.
