Unable to use 1440x900 resolution [Solved]

Greetings, I'm using a freshly installed Arch system but have been having a heck of a time trying to get my monitor to display at it's natural 1440x900 resolution.  I've been scouring the forums for ideas and fixes, but to no avail.  Here is my xorg.conf file:

My video card is an nVidia GeForce 8800 GT.  If I type "xrandr" into a terminal it says I only have two resolution options: 640x480 (current) 320X240.  Any help offered is greatly appreciated.  If more information is needed, I'll do my best to provide it.  Thanks for your assistance.

have you tried without an xorg?

if you have, then check your xserver log and dmesg for problems concerning EDID.. if thats the cas (like mine), then you will need to force feed the resolution with a modeline

Almost the same xorg as mine using 9500GT which works fine.

I run KDE
under menu/settings/nvidia xserver settings/xserver display configuration :

do you have the correct screen layout information showing ?

what resolutions do you have available there ?

To your Monitor section.

Ooops you are right ^^; my bad.
But the OP may have defined the values incorrectly, I have a Samsung 931BW with a native resolution of 1440x900 and the manual says:

Synchronization
Horizontal 31 ~ 81 kHz
Vertical 56 ~ 75 Hz

I don't know about other monitors but I guess that for these resolutions the values of horizontal synchronization will be similar, in my case everything works just fine even without an xorg.conf.

Starting X without an xorg.conf yields an 800x600 resolution.  Moving in the right direction at least.  the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file doesn't mention anything EDID.  Since more info is preferrable to less, here's the Xorg.0.log file without an xorg.conf

I tried adding

Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
Option   "UseEdid" "false"

and

Option "PreferredMode" "1440x900"

to the xorg.conf file, to no avail.

Finally, the NVIDIA X Server Settings manager just shows 640x480 and 320x240 options.

So far, using the xorg.conf gives me 640x480 and not using it gives me 800x600.  I appreciate all the help everyone has submitted so far.

they talk about a customEDID line in xorg.conf

in nvidia settings manager my CRT-O line shows an " aquire EDID " button - which saves a .bin file to where you want.

first thing, remove the xorg again... and remove the package xf86-video-vesa which is whats is being loaded by xorg when you remove the conf.

if there are edid errors with the nvidia driver. then generate a modeline for your resolution/refreshrate and add it to the xorg....

check this link @ the wiki to generate a modeline if its a lcd, use 60hz

When I removed the xf86-video-vesa package and removed xorg.conf X will not start.  It tries to load the vesa and the nv drivers which aren't there.  When I have the xf86-video-nv driver installed it says it can't find a screen.

Using an xorg.conf and the nvidia driver, X does start but still with the 640x480 resolution.  The /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks like this:

Alas, I'm still stuck on a 640x480 resolution.  Eldragon, the wiki link you gave me did say switch the Driver to "intel" but I didn't because I have an nVidia chip.  Should I have tried that or doesn't it matter?

I appreciate all the help everyone has offered me so far.  Hopefully a solution will be found.  Thanks for your continued efforts.

Yes.  I've tried "Modes '1440x900'" and "Modes '1440x900_60.00'" and neither has fixed the problem.  The Xorg.0.log file mentions that there are no valid modes for 1440x900.

Pjnsmb,

The interesting thing is that the consoles (VC/1 through VC/6) appear to be running at the correct resolution.  It's when I start the X server that things get funky.  Does editing the GRUB affect the X server as well or just the consoles?  The wiki gave me the impression that it would only affect the consoles.  I haven't tried it yet since they seem to be working fine.

Editing GRUB entries just before boot

Once you have selected some entry before booting, you can edit it using key 'e' and following on-screen instructions. Then you can boot it using key 'b'. This settings will not be saved.

not to make a change to any files until you know what will work.

I found the user manual for my monitor and the table says for 1440x900 the Hor. Freq. should be 70.635 and the Vert. Freq. 74.984.  How do I use those numbers in the xorg.conf?

to the "Monitor" section but still no luck.

looks to me like you need :

Horizontal 30-82
Vertical  56-76

from SYNC line

have you previously run another linux OS with this monitor o.k ?

I got the numbers from the that looks like the table on Page 9 on this guide.  The guide that came with the monitor has different numbers that I mentioned in the previous post.

I changed the HorizSync and VertRefresh sections in my xorg.conf to your suggestion and still no luck.  As of right now, this is what my xorg.conf looks like:

I still get the no valid modes for 1440x900 warning and there are other warings saying the CacheLines and PreferredMode options aren't used.

There's another warning that says "Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (no such file or directory)" toward the top of the log.  Is that something that needs to be addressed?

I haven't tried your GRUB/kernel solution.  I'll give that a go.

Edit:  I seem to be unable to install the hwinfo.  I get a 404 error when trying to download the hwinfo-16.2-1.2.src.rpm package.

Edit2: I looked up the hwinfo rpm package on the OpenSuse repo page and got it to download.  However, I'm not sure how to install the rpm file once I extract it.  There's no "PKGBUILD" file.

Edit3: I still haven't been able to get the hwinfo to install but I cheated and used the "vga=0x0365" example on the Wiki.  The consoles did change resolution, but when I type "startx" in the terminal, I'm still stuck with the 640x480.  I doubt this solution will work.

I have run Linux OSes without any problems with this monitor.  I'm not sure why it's a problem now.
