Firefox 3.5 released

So, what do you think about it?

Got it from a PKGBUILD in AUR (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26057).
First impressions: it's faster, Slashdot comments don't lag anymore, HTML5 examples work, video tag works and looks pretty awesome, though i couldnt get youtube's html5 section to work somewhy (www.youtube.com/html5).
I have to say I am impressed that they finally did some optimizations smile

Apparently the new TraceMonkey JS engine isn't 64-bit compatible yet. See the comments here: http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/tracemonkey-demo/

Re: Firefox 3.5 released

I can't wait until this gets into the official repo. I don't like installing firefox-beta from AUR and having to change all my web browser launch paths to firefox-beta.

/usr/bin/firefox is already a symlink, just make it point elseplace.

Re: Firefox 3.5 released

Had troubles compiling Firefox 3.5, so I just installed firefox-hg big_smile It's a very nice package btw. I figured out how to fix the strange fonts with newer Firefox versions big_smile I got 1600ms in the Sunspider test on x86_64. Dunno how good that is though.

Not bad at all, I've just built swiftweasel 3.5rc3 on x86_64 and it scored 3932ms, uzbl on the other hand scored 869ms...

Does anybody have an idea when this will land in the repos?

I know, I know, these things take time. No rush, I'm just curious.

Re: Firefox 3.5 released

Will be released when it is ready...  The updated to libjpeg which breaks a lot of packages (130 in [extra] including xulrunner) is about to hit [testing], so that makes this update a little more complicated.

Apparently when you run 64-bit Linux, you're a pariah among pariahs. I understand the need to get 3.5 out the door to keep up with the competition, but I agree with the comments about inevitable disappointment (which I just felt) and that it is substandard for such a large project to push a release out the door that doesn't work on all supported platforms.

Re: Firefox 3.5 released

I take it us arch64-ers will have to wait much longer? Well, the fox works for me, anyway, and not all my extensions are upped yet (the most important one, zotero, is though). I'll just wait smile

Why wait?  Why not just compile a bin32-firefox-pgo?

i dont want to be rude, but these kind of questions dont help anyone and dont get it released any sooner.. in the arch way, flag the package "out of date" (if it was not already done) and wait for it.....

im just pointing this out because it adds noise to the forums....and they are usually answered like allan did. wink

now on topic:

flash videos work full screen with no frame drops...

youtube's fullscreen is 4:3 with two black bars filling the screen...and of course, as it was reported in the OP, the html5 demo does not work

the tracemonkey demo showed a big improvement compared to 3.0, although this could be tailored...

Re: Firefox 3.5 released

Is there an advantage of waiting for ff3.5 to be in the repos over me just downloading it and mving it to the /usr/lib?  That's what I've been doing for quite some time.

Other than not having pacman keep track of things, there's a couple patches the Arch devs apply.  I suppose your way works if you don't care about that, but there's also a few files in the package in /usr/share. Also this update would need you to change the /usr/bin/firefox link from /usr/lib/firefox-3.0 to /usr/lib/firefox-3.5 to keep consistant I imagine.

Though if you're really that anxious you can try building it yourself from abs

I just use Alt+b to point to /usr/lib/firefox/firefox

What do the patches do?

Did anybody determine why it isn't working? How about this page: http://people.mozilla.com/~prouget/demo … play.xhtml

You can try http://www.dailymotion.com/openvideodemo also. Make your user agent is set to Firefox.

Re: Firefox 3.5 released

The reason youtube's html5 demo doesn't work in Firefox 3.5 is because it uses the h.264 codec, and Firefox only supports Ogg Theora and Vorbis. Disappointing, I know.

I found the previous poster's question helpful because I wanted to know if Firefox was going to be out on Archlinux soon or not. It seems it will take more time than expected because of the reason explained by Allan (thank him for his answer), so instead of waiting a few days I'll use the AUR package meanwhile.

Honestly, wasn't it expected to have such a question in a thread about Firefox 3.5?

Re: Firefox 3.5 released

Is there a reason it is not in the official repositories right now?

I would think with alphas, betas, and release candidates there would be enough time to prepare for a prompt release.  I am not complaining, just wondering.

Edit:  Nevermind, I skipped over Allan's post.  Sorry!

Re: Firefox 3.5 released

Got installed and tried HTML 5 and it did fine for me.

http://openvideo.dailymotion.com/us/fea … ation=1:15

Enabled tracemonkey for kicks but it didn't do anything.  Tested regular javascript on this page though and it is a bit faster:

http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/tracemonkey-demo/

Can't have everything.
