Laptop headphone volume level is extreamly high.

For some reason my laptop with Arch started producing extremely high volume levels out of the headphone output, so loud that it is necessary to tern the volume down to practically nothing to get a bearable volume level, and when the headphones are unplugged, unsurprisingly the speakers make no sound at all unless the volume is turned up again. Any suggestions on what could cause this and how to fix it?

I have the same behavior on my laptop, where I'm running Gentoo or Windows.

I think it's just hardware dependant . Am I wrong?

Well, I don't know about your hardware, but mine has independent volume controls for headphones and speakers; it took me some time to find about it

I had the same problem with my laptop. Just needed to run "alsamixer" and turn the headphone volume down there.

This wasn't hardware dependent, I have never had this problem before in XP, Ubuntu or Arch when I first installed it. Anyway a recent update has fixed the problem again, thanks anyway.
