Since the upgrade to 2.6.29 and also in 2.6.30 the system completely freezes on certain scenarios, even the sysrq magic cannot help in this case:
1. Ctrl-Alt-F1, login, then
sudo /etc/rc.d/kdm stop
startx
and the screen goes blank.
or
2. I'm trying to switch to another user from within KDE4, and the screen goes blank.
Please help me to solve this problem.

It is the nvidia driver's fault. With nv everything works normally. But the nv driver is too slow

With the new kernel and nvidia upgrade, the problem disappeared. Wheeeew finally!
