Hi ,
Yes I am still struggling.
I don't like this kernel version much.
No sound at all now.
Followed the wiki, tried all kinds of stuff.
I need to use jack with something that works.
I use jack or else when I hear sound it stutters.
OSS - system crash.
Alsa, Pulsesocalledaudio, no sound.
Throw this dog a bone!.
Sound card is detected.
Alsamixer unmuted all.
Do I need to patch the kernel or get rid of it?.

Try reverting the kernel to the previous version. Does the sound work there?

You have to tell us what sound card do u have. If u have hda-intel try adding to modprobe.conf "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop"... Available models can be found in /usr/src/2.6.30-ARCH/documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-models.txt . Try running alsaconf also...

Hi,
I am unsure how to revert to the previous kernel. I did Arch Linux fallback but the sound still never worked.
Where I've been trying stuff I've prolly made it worse.
The soundcard is c-media 8738.
And I'm AMD x86_64.
I just put oss and it crashed the system again.
soundcore module is missing I think.
I'm a gonner this time. I've had horrible thoughts about Ubuntu.
lspci lists the soundcard.
The volume applet keeps crashing.
And an error message keeps popping up that says kde has unloaded devices and lists my soundcard, capture and DAC whatever all that is. I use Gnome though. Is this kernel mental?.
Still no sound at all.

I have a via82xx card and am having similar problems. ALSA reports everything being fine, but nevertheless, there is nothing coming from my speakers.

Does no one have any solution for this?

If you wish to downgrade to the previous kernel this will show you how. The fallback does not use the "old" kernel.

Ever since I grabbed 2.6.30, whenever I boot, after the startup daemons execute there is a message about some sound driver. There is no way to tell for sure, but something is bugged in the 2.6.30 kernel somewhere. But my sound still works for hda-intal.

Are you sure it's the kernel and not this:
http://www.archlinux.org/news/450/
Perhaps you updated more than just the kernal.
If you have not done so, try alsamixer as your user and then alsactl store as root.
Alternatively alsaconf as root.

The OP has an issue with the kernel upgrade, so the obvious would be to downgrade and see if the error still occurs. However, the sound issue may be related to the new module init tools so it's worht taking that into consideration too.
