shutdown permission

Hi,

My arch installation has worked well until the last upgrade.  I was able to reboot/shutdown from my window manager menu without issues.

I have occassionally had to address issues and have found good info in the wikis, however, this time nothing seems to work.

Updated visudo, ..No Change!

tried chmod  +s /sbin/shutdown .... No Change!

I've no way of shutting down without logging into root terminal.

Any help would be appreciated.

[Edit]
Thanks, but I don't have issues mounting drives and have never actually utilized Hal?

I am not allowed to shutdown/reboot even when I'm logged in as root!!  something about
"initctl" permission denied, must be root!  nothing but using the power-button on the box turns my machine off.
