Hi,
i'm going to buy a HTPC (ASRock ION 330 - http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/2792/a … ndex.html) and want to use archlinux as OS, with a self-made media center. the plan is, to use openbox as graphical desktop and plug in the necessary software for playing music, view pictures and movies. with some keybindings, this combination should be pretty simple and controlled with a remote-control.
while finding software for music playback and viewing pictures is more a matter of taste, i don't know if the plan fails because of bluray, and in general HD-playback.
the last posts about bluray playback which i found in the archforums are a bit dated or i just didn't search detailed enough...
currently i have no arch installation to test. what's the current state of bluray playback in archlinux (or general gnu/linux)? what about DVD playback? is there a solution comparable in quality to the ffdshow codec?
Thanks!
EDIT: The ASRock ION 330 uses a GeForce 9400M graphics processor, so the system will run using the proprietary nvidia-drivers - if that makes a difference.
EDIT2: changed the title to be a question

You'll still need the HDCP stuff (which is not just hardware but also software if I'm not mistaken). There is support on Linux for the codecs used in Blu-Ray - that is, if you have a rip, you can play it back. Discs won't play back though - it's a bit like the CSS situation.

Isn't Blu-Ray playback in the kernel?

The H$llyw$$d guys would kill themselfs if that was true (eventually they will because someone will find an elegant way around the protection).
They want to keep secret as much as they can so people can't freely make backups/rips of the purchased disks (speaking of personal use only).
This means that it will take a long time before open source OSs can playback bluray disks.

That article actually got my hopes up for using BDs with the Xbox 360 HD DVD player, the way it's written makes it look like they're recommending that, but the BD wasn't recognized by Arch.
