Just installed Arch for the first time ever. I'm able to successfully login as root but I can't seem to do anything with pacman. Any command I type in (with the exception of -V or -h) gives me this error: "error: could not register 'extra' database (unexpected system error)".
A little searching brings up this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=74027
But the solution someone suggested was that pacman wasn't being run with sufficient permission... but I'm logged in as root?
Any help here?

look in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and see if there is a mirror uncommented.
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I haven't seen that error, but here's what I would try (just trying to be helpful):
Is your network really working? Try typing: ping 74.125.67.100
What does your /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file look like? Try removing entries under all countries except the one you're in.
Tried reinstalling?
Maybe your installation disc is bad... Did you verify it after burning?

Okay, checked my /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and I do have a mirror uncommented, the one I used during installation. I tried changing the mirror by uncommenting another and saving the file, but it told me that I didn't have the permissions to do that, which again confuses me as I am logged in as root.
I do believe my network is working, it downloaded the packages during installation just fine. Haven't tried reinstalling yet, I suppose it couldn't hurt.
And yes, the download and the disc are good, checked them both (:!

just to be sure check rc.conf networking section and see if there are correct.
