"Please choose any additional partitions to mount"?

So I tried to install Arch on my system which is set up like this:
NTFS partition for windows
Fat32 for diagnostic tools (Dell's)
Ext3 for linux
SWAP for... you guess.

Now I consulted the wiki and the way I understood is is this:
in the installer I want to skip partitioning. I want to go straight to "choose mount points"
I want to mount Ext3 as root
I want SWAP as swap
now after I do that I get two problems:
1. the installer asks to choose any other partitions I want to mount. If I want to make sure the installer leaves windows alone, would I want to chose none? I'm really worried the installer will ignore windows, how do I make sure it leaves windows be?
2. After pressing ok I get "Can't make swap". Why would that be? The only reason I can think of is that I did not format SWAP thinking it was unnecessary since it's essentially a buffer to hold information. Should I have formated it?

Thanks

#1 Yep choose none if you only want one linux partition. As long as you're skipping the partioning step windows shouldn't be touched.
#2 not sure what's going on either

For number 2 the only thing I would try would be going into fdisk from the console and setting the partition you want to use as swap as the swap type.
