Re: 1 problem + 1 question

In the mixer, did you try to click "select controls" and activate the ones for headphones?

Re: 1 problem + 1 question

Do the headphones actually work?  It's easy to jump right into troubleshooting the software when the hardware is busted.

What mixer are you using?

As for your MSN troubles... it's been a long time since I used it, but Pidgin supports MSN protocol.  I don't remember having problems with it.  I've never used amsn.

Re: 1 problem + 1 question

How do you start the mixer?  Are you using GNOME?

Re: 1 problem + 1 question

Try using Songbird as a supplement for iTunes.

Re: 1 problem + 1 question

1) Many iTunes like program could be used. I think the most common are Rhythmbox and Banshee. I actually prefer banshee.
2) For the webcam use I'm not a fan of it, so I use pidgin, I thought amsn should work correctly by around this year. You can try mercury messenger, the bad news is taht it si written in Java, but if you don't mind it is ok it supports webcam, not sue how well. Or you can wait for emesene2 or galaxium messenger to add support for webcams.
3) Have you tried alsamixer for your sound problem??

Re: 1 problem + 1 question

alsa starts in the background because it's decorated with the @ in rc.conf.  It shouldn't make a difference in your case, but it does suppress error messages.  Perhaps you should edit it to remove the @ and see if you get any errors during startup.  (It wouldn't be any different from typing /etc/rc.d/alsa restart though.)

It means that it started running in the background (I guess in another thread) that's what the @ before a daemon means. This helps to have a faster boot, something can run without problems, but maybe some problems could arise when you have a daemon starting in the background while another starts at the same time but this needs last mentioned daemon to be completed.

I don't see any problem with alsa, actually I have that one and some others starting running in the background.
